![]() The American Legion provides a comprehensive network of service officers at the local, county, state and national levels through the Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Program. These dedicated volunteers assist all veterans and their dependents in applying for federal and state benefits which have been earned by the veteran's service in the armed forces. More than 80 American Legion accredited representatives are available across the state and in each local county's Veterans' Service Agency to provide free assistance and independent counseling to all of the state's veterans. These men and women are there to help fellow veterans cut through red tape, obtain benefits, and solve problems. Many attend state Legion programs each year for new information on claims, forms, veterans' rights and benefits. Volunteers from the Department of New York donate thousands of hours of service to hospitalized veterans each year. Many of these veterans not only bring cheer and comfort to veteran patients, but also provide a service which helps to keep down the cost of their hospital care. In addition, The American Legion, Department of New York Rehabilitation Committee has several subcommittees overseeing such issues as: legislative, women veterans, homeless veterans, cemeteries, etc. These subcommittees are designed to keep track of current legislation affecting veterans' benefits.
