2008 ORATORICAL CONTEST

New York Oratorical Contest

Each year an Oratorical contest is sponsored by the Department of New York and Legion Posts throughout the state. The Oratorical contest provides an opportunity for students to improve their knowledge of the Constitution and ideals of the United States while vying for scholarships. Beginning at the local Post level, elevating through the County, District and Zone competition, the five final Zone winners compete at the Department level. The winner of this contest then competes at the National Oratorical Contest in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Zone awards are as follows: First place advances to Department level contest; Second place receives a $1,500 savings bond; Third place, a $1,000 savings bond; and Fourth place, also a $1,000 savings bond.

The American Legion Department of New York offers winners competing in the Department finals scholarships only in the following amounts: $6,000 for First; $4,000 for Second; $2,500 for Third; $2,000 for Fourth and Fifth places. Payments are made directly to your college and are awarded over a four year period. The winner of this contest is invited to attend the Annual Department Convention.
